In the second Test Cricket in Sri Lanka, Ireland scored 492 runs, but they still fell short by an innings. If so, was it a record? Questioned, among many others, Brian McKenzie from IrelandIreland did establish a new record for the most significant total by a team that went on to lose a Test Cricket by innings with their 492 in the first innings last week in Galle. Before that, it was England’s 477 against India in Chennai in 2016–17. After amassing 759 for 7, India declared England was once more knocked out for 207.

Only two higher totals in the history of first-class cricket have failed to prevent an innings loss.1995 saw Nottinghamshire make 527 (and 157) at Northampton, but they were defeated by Northamptonshire (781 for 7 declared). However, that record was surpassed at Grace Road in July of last year when Leicestershire’s 584 (and 183) were insufficient to prevent an innings defeat by Glamorgan (795 for 5 declared), who broke it.

 

I noted that Don Bradman hit more runs than India did in both innings of India’s first Test Cricket against Australia. Exist any other instances in a Test where one batter outscored the opposition in both innings? asked Indian AK Srivastava

You cite the incident in Brisbane in 1947–1948 when Don Bradman (185) played against India (58 and 98). It was the third time in the Test match, and it has only happened twice since. In Cape Town in 1888–1889, Bobby Abel of England made the first occurrence when he scored 120 against South Africa’s 47 and 43. Len Hutton, another England opener, scored 364 runs at The Oval in 1938 against Australia (201 and 123); Inzamam-ul-Haq, scored 329 runs for Pakistan against New Zealand (73 and 246) in Lahore in 2002; and Matthew Hayden, who scored 119 runs for Australia vs. Pakistan (59 and 53) at Sharjah in 2002-03, were also successful.

If you include both innings, Patsy Hendren (169 and 45) for England against Australia (122 and 66) in Brisbane in 1928–19, Gordon Greenidge (134 and 101) for West Indies vs. England (71 and 126) in 1976, Justin Langer (191 and 97) for Australia vs. Pakistan (179 and 72) in Perth in 2004–05, and Dimuth Karunaratne (158 not out and 60) for Sri Lanka vs.

Is it accurate to say that Shai Hope leads all openers in one-day international average? Barbadian Kirk Mayweather was questioned.

Though Shubman Gill of India averages 70.75 from exactly 20 innings, West Indies’ Shai Hope currently leads all players who have opened in more than 20 ODIs with an average of 60.74.

Given a minimum of 20 innings as the opener, four other players average more than 50: Rohit Sharma (55.76 from 156 innings), Usman Khawaja (53.63 from 20), Travis Head (50.60 from 21), and Imam-ul-Haq (50.55 from 58). Click here for the list.

 

Openers have scored all double-centuries in men’s and women’s ODIs. What is a non-openers highest score if such is the case? United States citizen Dipak Basu was questioned.

First, you’re right that openers scored all 12 double centuries in official one-day internationals (10 by men, 2 by women). The best from a different position is 194 not out by Zimbabwe’s Charles Coventry, who batted third against Bangladesh in Bulawayo in 2009; the best in women’s ODIs is 178 not off by another No. 3, Chamari Athapaththu for Sri Lanka against Australia in Bristol during the 2017 World Cup. Strangely, Coventry and Athapaththu both had losing results at Test Cricket.
